Confirm Bolton Now!

The U.N. is a pathetic, corrupt, ineffective organization and we need tough, aggressive representation there. Bolton has proven himself to the right man for the job. - Alan

"No shrinking violet, he's just the type of no-nonsense, "get 'er done" diplomat Washington needs in New York right now, fighting for American interests in the divided and increasingly impotent U.N. Security Council...

Critics say Bolton isn't popular with his U.N. colleagues. Good! The likely reason is that Bolton actually expects them to do something, like solve world problems and clean up the U.N.'s act.

In less than a year's time, John Bolton has become an indispensable advocate at the United Nations, advancing and protecting American interests at a time when we're facing unparalleled international challenges."

Alan Dershowitz on Supporting John Bolton.

"As a liberal Democrat, I listened carefully to the opposition voiced by many Democratic senators to the nomination of John Bolton as our chief representative to the United Nations. Mr. Bolton has been representing us at the United Nations since August. During the current Middle East crisis, I have been able to listen for myself to what Mr. Bolton has been saying at the United Nations.

On the basis of his performance, I have become a Bolton supporter. He speaks with moral clarity. He is extremely well prepared. He is extraordinarily articulate. He places the best face on American policy, particularly in the Middle East during this crucial time. "

The World Series of Terror 2006

Michael Medved has dubbed the current struggle for dominance in the terror business "The World Series of Terror", which is an amusing way to describe a very serious situation. It is clear that Al Qaeda and Hezbollah are slugging it out for the title of top threat to the infidels and a lot of innocent people will get hurt in the process. If and when they are done destroying the infidels they will go back to killing each other, but first things first.

Ayman al-Zawahiri said that Al Qaeda now views "all the world as a battlefield open in front of us... It is a Jihad for the sake of God and will last until (our) religion prevails ... from Spain to Iraq. We will attack everywhere." Spain was controlled by Arab Muslims until they were driven from power at the turn of the 16th century, so these sociopathic primitives with 20th century weapons are out to settle that 500 year old disgrace, along with more recent insults. He also said "My fellow Muslims, ... you are alone on the battlefield. Rely on God and fight your enemies ... make yourselves martyrs."

I have to say I support him on the last part of that call to service. With persistence and a little luck, I am hoping we can help many thousands of them achieve their martyrdom in the very near future. Like cutting out a cancer, removing these people from this world will hurt a bit, but if it comes down to "us or them", I'm rooting for us. Sorry if this sounds a little harsh, but these backward psychos have been killing around the world for decades and I don't believe we can continue to hope they'll change their ways.

Sadly the realization and motivation that came with the 9/11 attacks have faded from the memory of many Americans, and now the weak among us are back to thinking we can somehow "make nice" with these savages. It is likely we will soon see attacks on "soft targets" in the US. After they shoot up a few shopping malls, churches, and schools maybe the people with blinders on will get their backbone up and back the fight.

Right now the appeasers and "in denial crowd" are preoccupied with placing blame for everything on President Bush, as though the attacks on the USA and other countries between 1979 and 2000 never happened. They are simple-minded enough to believe that the 9/11 attacks were somehow solely Bush's fault, even though the same group declared open war on us in 1996, attacked us numerous times during the '90's and the plans for 9/11 were fully formed during the previous President's watch. But in case you don't want to deal with reality, Howard Dean and John Kerry here to assure you none of the current conflicts would be happening if only Democrats had been in charge. Only the most insanely partisan dummies can believe those claims are in any way true.

Liberals (most), Democrats (not all), appeasers, cowards, whatever you want to call them, are now more concerned with providing legal protection and due process rights to the captured enemy than they are condemning that enemy for indiscriminately bombing women and children, or for slicing the heads off our reporters, humanitarians and soldiers. They would love to see the entire Middle East handed over to men who pull kids off a school bus a machinegun those who are of a Muslim faith other than their own. I suspect these Americans' focus will shift when it is their wives, husbands, sons and daughters lying in a pool of blood in The GAP. It has always been true that a conservative is simply a liberal who has been mugged by reality.

All in all, I'm a nice guy. I want people to be happy. If al-Zawahiri and his guys want martyrdom, lets give it to them... with extreme prejudice.

Keep Your Hands Off My Virtual Chips!

If the government bans internet gambling, I might have to get a girlfriend, which would be far more expensive and time consuming! - Alan

"What's the difference between the legal forms of gambling and the illegal forms? Some of the legal varieties are less appealing, in part because the "vig" tends to be higher (lotteries return less than 60 percent of their take in prizes). Certain kinds of authorized gambling convey the special grimness of state-sponsored vice, which will be familiar to those who have visited riverboat casinos in desperate Mississippi and Indiana towns. But morally and in terms of their social consequence, it's hard to draw any distinction at all. "

Olbermann is a Joke, And Not A Funny One

"Who says The New York Times has lost touch with reality? A recent puff piece by TV reporter Bill Carter on MSNBC's "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann honors him as the "centerpiece" and a "great growth story" of MSNBC. He's up 30 percent in the 25-to-54 demographic. How significant is this? Since Olbermann came to TV as a sportscaster, let's just say this is like celebrating a .200 hitter for having the best batting average on a last-place baseball team."

CAUTION: Rage Within the GOP

While Bush and crew certainly have their problems, it would be a big mistake to put the likes of Pelosi, Boxer and Shummer in charge of Congress. As Al Rantel likes to say "With the Republicans in charge we are on the slow bus to Hell. With the Democrats in charge we are on the express bus to Hell". - Alan

"I first became aware of the spreading discontent on the right in visiting with people in the church social hall after the funeral this spring for Lyn Nofziger, Ronald Reagan's longtime press spokesman and adviser. The comments about the Bush White House people -- who were notable by their absence at the service -- startled me.

But since then I have heard the refrain over and over: They never reached out to us. They never thought they needed our help. Now they're in trouble. To hell with them."

Not About Two Kidnapped Soldiers.

The question has been recently asked; "Is all this Israel is doing in Lebanon worth it, over just two kidnapped soldiers?" Anyone paying attention, and possessing any common sense, can see that this conflict is about far more than that. Hezbollah has been attacking Israel off and on for the entire six years since Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon. Key in the agreement leading to that withdrawal was a condition that the UN and the Lebanese Army disarm Hezbollah and take control of the area. But the UN and the Lebanese government allowed Hezbollah to train their fighters, build fortifications, stockpile weapons, shoot the occasional rocket into Israel and launch hostile incursions into Israel from southern Lebanon. What did they think the end result of this build-up by Hezbollah would be?

Israel, since pulling out of Lebanon and Gaza, has endured regular kidnappings, suicide bombings and rocket attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah. Yet some would be so shallow as to say this is all about just two soldiers? In the act of kidnapping the two soldiers Hezbollah actually killed several other IDF troops. Suggesting this conflict is about two kidnapped soldiers ignores history and Hezbollah's stated objectives, and, at the very least, implies that dead Israelis don't count at all.

Hezbollah's leadership has admitted underestimating the Israeli response to their aggression. They thought they could kill and kidnap Israeli soldiers, who were minding their own business in Israel, and then negotiate the release of a number of their people from Israeli jails. The Hezbollah loyalists in jail in Israel were not innocent civilians or fighters randomly captured in covert raids into Lebanon; they are individuals tried and convicted of crimes against Israel, including but not limited to, planning and/or participating in the killing of Israeli citizens.

Faith and nationalism: Indivisible in America

When the Continental Army fought to defend the new nation's independence, it chose as its favorite marching song an adapted hymn, Chester, by the Boston church composer William Billings:

Let tyrants shake their iron rods

And slavery clank her galling chains,

We fear them not, we trust in God,

New England's God forever reigns.

It would be hard to suggest that patriots who marched to battle singing these words intended to risk death for the sake of “separation of church and state.”

It's All AboutYour Feelings.

Juan Williams feels leaking state secrets is okay if "your conscience compels you"? He makes it perfectly clear why the left should not be managing anything that matters in this country.

By his standard, if someone does not approve of practices of their employer, or maybe just does not like their boss, it would be okay to break the law, leak classified material, foul up investigations and/or weaken national security simply because they are compelled to do so by their personal "feelings". Preposterous!

A Democrat I Would Vote For.

NM Gov. Bill Richardson. He has improved the business climate in NM by lowering taxes (thereby raising NM tax revenues); he is strong on border enforcement and has high level experience as Ambassador to the UN and Secretary of Energy, and he focused on foreign relations during his 14 years in Congress. He is articulate, a decent person and a strong leader... hence, has zero traction among Democrats for the Presidency.

Lady In The Water.

Heads up!

I had my suspicions previously, but now it is official: M. Night Shyamalan takes himself way too seriously. I didn't expect much and got even less. This film is so bad... you never even actually see the lady in the water!

Blast from the Past!

Over the week-end I had the great joy of making contact with an old Army buddy who I had not seen or spoken with in almost 30 years (1st Cav Div, Ft. Hood Texas 1973-'76). Bill Kelly remembered our family business name, found my brother through the internet and provided his phone number. We talked for two hours Sunday. It was great to hear his voice and exchange stories about where we have been and what we've done over the past three decades.

Oddly enough, Bill describes himself as a liberal Democrat and I am clearly not a liberal Democrat, yet we are not that far apart on our feelings about the war in Iraq and other world affairs. Bill served in Desert Storm and lived in Europe for many years, so I am guessing liberals who actually have some experience out in the world have more sense. At least it's good to know it is possible to be a Democrat and not be a totally partisan loon with no tolerance for opposition.

If you have old friends who were important to you, consider tracking them down. Hooking up with my best buddy from Ft. Hood after all this time was a real pleasure and has lifted my spirits.
